Circle The Date
12/18: @ Holmdel - With the Griffins graduating their big three of Panzarella, Dailey, and DiSalvo, we get our first look at how their dual lineup may shake out this year on the road against the Hornets.
Donovan Catholic took a big hit to graduation, including losing three State qualifiers. As a result, this will be a very young team, but not a team without their share of experience and talent.
Down low, the Griffins have a solid group returning in juniors Cael Rankin (31-12 / 2nd D26, 4th R7), and Jacob Maroukis (14-16), and sophomore Nick Digiantomasso (13-19). They provide a solid foundation to break some new faces around. Among them are sophomore Jesse Hummel and a group of frosh in Patrick Dellane, Eric Iannelli, Steve Morrow, and Mason Hopson.
The bulk of the hit to graduation the Griffins took was in the middle of the lineup, however, this is still going to be a very experienced group, and could be a strength this year for DC. Euan McIntyre and Mike Jedziniak were both lineup regulars a season ago as freshmen, and senior Dan Post enters his 3rd season as a starter. This group is backed by a couple of solid transfers in Chris Gallegos (3rd D24 at CBA) and Dominic Tangredi, a 17-bout winner at TR East a year ago.
170-up will be consist of almost entirely newcomers to the lineup. Junior Luke Barlet is the lone returning starter, and is coming off a solid 17-win season as a sophomore. He could be part of a potential very solid 1-2 punch at 220/Hwt with the addition of Nick Kenmure, a 19-match winner for Pt Beach in 2017. Kenmure looks to be the lone senior of an otherwise very young group of upperweights that could even include a handful of frosh getting regular time.
Obviously, when you're breaking in a lot of young talent, it helps to have experience and proven commodities surrounding them in the lineup. Fortunately, that seems to be the case here with the trio of lowerweights, the vets in the middle, and Barlet and Kenmure up top. This should be a pretty balanced lineup with some good depth, which is great to see considering the health of the program several years back. The coaches and kids have worked extremely hard and taken tremendous strides to build the program up, and look to keep it on the right path again this season.
